Yes and no, because there are two pairs of Laser Girls.
The story ones Our story
Lumina and Spark — two superhero sisters from a distant, energy-rich world called Luminara. Beings made of knotted light, with no atoms at all, who crossed the universe to reach Earth. Meet them here.
The real ones Real
Two real sisters — makers— who build things with light: the superhero mirror, the lenticular flip-prints, the booth you'll find us at. The story sisters are their superhero selves. That's the whole idea of this project: everyone has a superhero self, and ours happens to be made of light.
What are they?
A light-based intelligence. Their minds — memories, feelings, personalities — are stored in the shapes of knots tied in light. And to walk among us they wear reprogrammed biology: living tissue, re-engineered so light can drive it, gives them a body to inhabit. Part starlight, part rewritten cell.
What are their powers?
- Space travel— they cross light-years as a beam, using a black hole's gravity as a lens to stay focused
- Time travel— light experiences no time of its own, so "when" is as navigable for them as "where"
- Reprogrammable biology — they can enter and steer living systems that are engineered to listen to light
- Cutting and welding — a focused, coherent beam; an industrial laser, but alive and aimed by intent
- Laser tweezers — gripping and moving objects from across the room with nothing but light
- Plus flight (radiation pressure) and listening through windows (laser vibrometry)

Why are they here?
Two reasons, and they pull in the same direction. The Superman reason: to do good — to help a world that is hurting itself. In school they learned about Arcton, a planet whose people destroyed it, and asked whether any world like it was still alive. The answer was one: Earth. Dangerous, at war with itself — but not yet lost.
And the "to boldly go" reason: to explore. To cross a distance no one from home had ever crossed and see a world made of matter with their own light.

Why now?
Because human technology only just crossed the two thresholds that make arrival possible:
- Plasma containment — a fusion reactor (a tokamak) that can finally bottle the enormous energy a photonic being carries
- Programmable biology — cells that light can switch and steer, giving the sisters a body to land in rather than dissipating into the cold
A hundred years ago, Earth couldn't have received them. Now — just barely — it can.
Why don't they just go back to their world?
The crossing is one-way in practice. Arriving took a precise alignment: a black hole to focus them, a fusion reactor to hold them, a reprogrammable body to receive them. None of that is waiting on the far side to send them home. And more than that — they chose a world that needs saving. Going back would mean leaving the very thing they crossed the universe to do.
Does their world still exist?
Yes. Their home — a magnetosphere planet called Luminara — is intact, safe, and energetically rich: a world of abundant light where holding yourself together takes no effort at all. They didn't flee a dying planet. They left a safe one, on purpose, to come to a dangerous one. That is the heart of who they are.
What are their problems?
Our universe is energetically cold for them, and staying in one piece here is a constant fight:
- Open air scatters photons — walking around unshielded is like us swimming in a storm
- Heat is noise — warm air jiggles their light and blurs their shape at the edges
- Wi-Fi makes them glitch — radio waves are light too, so a crowded signal space feels like everyone shouting at once
- Big feelings shake their knots — fear or fury can literally start to untie them; staying calm is survival
Underneath all of it: decoherence. They survive by constant self-correction, holding their own knots together moment to moment — which is why the glass necklaces they wear matter more to them than anything.
