The real Laser Girls — and the story they imagined
Everything on this site is one of two things: something that really happened, or something two real sisters made up together — and we will always tell you which is which. That honesty is the whole point of the project.
Two sisters, a soldering iron, and a lot of glow wire
The Laser Girls are two real sisters. There was no lightning strike, no radioactive anything. One summer they built themselves suits of glowing wire — with their dad, a workbench, and a great deal of patience — and wore them to Open Sauce last year, carrying a glowing orb they made. Really happened
All weekend, people kept asking the same question: "What are you two supposed to be?"They flew home without an answer — and the question followed them. About six months later it arrived: Lumina, Spark, a home planet called Luminara, and the story you'll find on every other page here.
So when we say the Laser Girls are real — that's what we mean. Real kids, who really build things, who really stand at a real booth and turn other kids into glowing adventurers.
Lumina, Spark, and a world made of light
The story goes like this: two sisters made of knotted laser light cross the universe from a glowing world called Luminara, and learn to live in our slow, cold, wonderful world. Our story — invented by the real sisters, written down by our whole family, and kept honest by one strict rule: wherever the story touches real physics, we label what's true. Light really can be tied in knots. Nobody is really made of it. Both facts are on this site, wearing badges.
A new kind of superhero
We'll be honest: the word "superhero" made us nervous. Most superheroes solve their problems by hitting them. Capes, explosions, someone getting punched through a building — that's not this. The Laser Girls carry no weapons, fight no villains, and never will. So what's left, once you take away the fighting?

That's the kind of superhero our booth builds. When the magic mirror shows you as an adventurer made of light, nothing in that picture is armed — and everything in it is possible to learn.
