The real Laser Girls — and the story they imagined
Everything on this site is something that really happened, or a story we made up. We will tell you which is which.
Two sisters and an idea
The Laser Girls are two real sisters. One summer, they decided to build laser girl suits for Halloween and tried many ideas. In the end, they settled on a mix of fluorescent paint and electroluminescent wire. They wore them to Open Sauce last summer, and were handed a glowing orb by one of the exhibitors. Really happened
The show photographer snapped this cool photo of them, and it featured on the Open Sauce site. It turns out there is no laser "superhero" — so they had the idea to make some stories around Laser Girls. About six months later the ideas evolved into Lumina, Spark, a home planet called Luminara, and the story you'll find on this website.
So when we say the Laser Girls are real — they are. Real kids, who build things with their friends.
Lumina, Spark, and a world made of light
The story goes like this: two sisters made of knotted laser light cross the universe from a glowing world called Luminara, and learn to live in our slow, cold, wonderful world. Our story — invented as a family project, and kept honest by one strict rule: wherever the story touches real physics, we label what's true. Light really can be tied in knots. Nobody is really made of it. Both facts are on this site, wearing badges.
A new kind of superhero
We'll be honest: the word "superhero" made us nervous. Most superheroes solve their problems by hitting them. Capes, explosions, someone getting punched through a building — that's not this. The Laser Girls carry no weapons. So what's left, once you take away the fighting?
