The real physics behind the powers

Superpowers are usually pure make-believe. The Laser Girls' powers are different: every one is a real experiment, done in a real lab, turned up to eleven. Here are the receipts.

Flight — light literally pushes Real science

Photons weigh nothing, but they carry momentum— when light hits something, it gives a tiny shove. It's called radiation pressure, and it's so real that spacecraft have flown on it: solar sails like Japan's IKAROS and the Planetary Society's LightSail unfurled giant mirrors and let sunlight push them through space.

The push is gentle — sunlight on your open hand shoves with less force than a landing fly — but in space, gentle forever beats strong for a moment. A being made of light, trading momentum with the world around her, flies the same way. She just is her own sail.

Light tweezers — a Nobel Prize you can borrow Real science

Focus a laser beam tightly enough and something amazing happens: tiny objects get trapped in the bright spot and follow it when it moves. These optical tweezers let biologists grab a single living cell — even a single molecule of DNA — and move it without touching it.

Arthur Ashkin won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing them. When a Laser Girl lifts a dropped bead back into your hand from across the room, she's doing Ashkin's experiment — just bigger, and by will.

Listening through windows Real science

When you talk in a room, your voice makes everything tremble a tiny bit — including the window glass. Bounce a laser off that glass and the trembling wiggles the reflected beam. Decode the wiggles, and you can hear the conversation. This is the laser microphone — real technology, used in real surveillance.

A Laser Girl doesn't need the equipment: she is the beam. Resting a strand of her light on a windowpane, she feels your voice as ripples running up the strand. (She considers eavesdropping rude. Usually.)

Black holes as lenses

Gravity bends the path of light. Point a telescope past a heavy galaxy and you'll see the galaxies behind it smeared into arcs and rings — the heavy galaxy is acting as a gravitational lens. Einstein predicted it; the 1919 eclipse expedition confirmed it; astronomers now use it as a routine telescope upgrade.

Talking to cells with light Real science

Here's the newest one. Scientists can add a light-sensitive switch to living cells, so that shining light on them turns their activity on or off — like a light-operated remote control for biology. It's called optogenetics, and researchers use it every day to study how brains work.

For the sisters, this is the most important invention humans ever made. It means light can speak to living bodies — which is the doorway that let beings made of light come live in a world made of cells.

The pattern to notice

Every power is the same move: take something light really does — push, grip, sense, bend, signal — and imagine a being who can do it on purpose, at any scale. That's a good recipe for your own inventions, too: start from a true thing, then turn the volume up and see what world you get.
