Their Fictional Universe
In the story, the Laser Girls are sisters made entirely of light — light that has been tied into knots so it holds together like a body. Their memories, their feelings, even their personalities are stored in the shapes of those knots.
Lumina
Careful, curious, and calm. She's the one who checks the knots twice, reads every warning, and remembers the way home. Her light glows deep green, like starlight through sea glass.
Spark
Bold, playful, and fast. She's the first one through the door and the first one to try something nobody has tried before. Her light burns ember-red and flares to gold when she laughs.
(Their true names are patterns of light too complicated to say out loud — so these are the Earth-names they chose. Lumina took hers from their home world, Luminara. Spark took hers from the home spark she carries in her necklace.)

Why they came to Earth
In school, the sisters learned about a planet called Arcton— a world whose people fought each other until nothing was left. It's a sad story, and it made the sisters ask one question: "Are there other planets like Arcton that haven't destroyed themselves yet?"
The answer was yes. One. Its people call it Earth. It's a dangerous place — its people argue and fight and hurt their own world. But unlike Arcton, Earth still has a chance. So the sisters decided to go. Not to escape their home — their world, Luminara, is safe and beautiful — but to help a world that isn't.
How do you travel as a beam of light? Almost real
Crossing space, light spreads out and fades — so the sisters aimed themselves past a black hole and used its gravity as a giant lens to stay focused across light-years. Gravity really does bend light like a lens: astronomers use gravitational lensing every day to see faraway galaxies. Using it as a highway for people made of light? That part is our story.
And there was one more problem: when you arrive as pure light, you need somewhere to land. Earth only just qualified, because humans had just invented two things — fusion reactors that can bottle up huge energy, and programmable biology that lets light talk to living cells. A hundred years earlier, the sisters would have had nowhere to go. The trip was one-way. They knew that when they left.

The glass necklaces
Each sister wears a necklace of glass beads, and it is the most important thing she owns. Here's why: our world is rough on light. Air scatters it. Heat shakes it. Radio waves and Wi-Fi jangle it. But glass is the kindest home humans have ever made for light— it's what optical fibers are made of, the threads that carry the internet under the ocean.
So a glass bead isn't jewelry to a Laser Girl. It's shelter. Inside a bead she can rest, repair her knots, and store a memory where nothing can shake it loose. The sisters' necklaces are matched — what one sister stores in her beads, the other can read. It's how they stay connected when they can't be light together.
And in the very center bead, each sister keeps her home spark: a captured flicker of Luminara'sown light. Every being from their world carries one. It connects them to home and keeps them whole — which is why losing a necklace isn't like losing a toy. It's like losing a piece of yourself.

Optical fiber is so clear that light can travel about 100 kilometers inside it before fading by half. Scientists also trap light in tiny glass rings called whispering-gallery resonators, where it circles millions of times — like a bell that keeps ringing.
First light on Earth
They came down at dawn, over a quiet forest pond — two beams braided together, slowing, cooling, learning the feel of air. For a few minutes the woods glowed with colors Earth had never grown on its own.
What's hard about being made of light
Earth is what the sisters call an energetically cold world. Staying in one piece here takes constant work:
- Open air scatters photons. Walking around unshielded is like us swimming in a storm.
- Heat is noise. Warm air jiggles their light and blurs their shape at the edges.
- Wi-Fi makes them glitch.Radio waves are light too (just a kind we can't see), so a crowded signal space feels like everyone shouting at once.
- Big feelings shake their knots.When a sister is scared or furious, her pattern can wobble — literally. Staying calm isn't just nice for them. It's survival.
